Realm Breaker!

Here comes Realm Breaker! Realm Breaker is a card game where you take a team of heroes, customize your deck, and battle it out against another team of heroes.

In this blog, I plan on updating you on where the game is in development, explain the basics of the game, and share with you the different cards that will appear in the game. The most basic of updates on the development of the game right now is that it is designed and play tested, but it has not gone through any manufacturing yet. I will update you on the progress of turning this game into a physical product as we go. So until then, let’s start off with the basics of the game!

Constructing A Deck

In Realm Breaker you take control of several Hero cards. Each Hero has an amount of HP, or how much damage they can take before they are defeated. Your team of Heroes consists of a number of Heroes whose total combined HP is no more than 80HP. So you could have a team of 3 Heroes with 30HP, 30HP and 20HP. Or you could have a team of 4 Heroes with 30HP, 20HP, 15HP, and 15HP. You then set them aside and start building your deck.

A deck consists of 50 cards. There are several types of cards such as Strategy cards, Action cards, and Equipment cards. Each type of card can be played and used in different ways at different times during the game. Another way to differentiate between cards is their colored style. There are 5 color styles and a colorless style known as a freestyle card. You can mix and match different color styles when building your deck or stick to just one color and gain access to a special type of card known as a Tactic card. Color style cards can have up to 3 copies in a deck, freestyle cards can have 2 copies in a deck, and then some cards have specific traits that mean you can only have 1 copy of that card in your deck.

Once you’ve built your deck it’s time to grab an opponent and battle!

Setting Up The Game

Starting a game consists of 5 steps:

Step 1: Each game starts by randomly determining who will go first as the active player.

Step 2: Both players will put down a Tactic card if they have one.

Step 3: The Active Player will then put down their team of Heroes, starting with the Hero who is the Active Hero, then the other Heroes who are in the Backline.

Step 4: The other player will do the same.

Step 5: Both players draw 4 cards.

Playing The Game

After setting up the game, we go into the first Round. In each Round, the Active Player will go through 5 Phases.

  1. Draw Phase: The active player draws a card.

  2. Strategy Phase: The active player can do the following in any order. Play Strategy, Equipment, Landmark, Objective or Ally cards. Cycle out who the Active Hero is. Activate Strategy cards and Strategy Abilities. Then the Strategy Phase ends with the active player deciding if they wish to engage in the Action Phase or skip it and go straight to the Regroup Phase.

  3. Action Phase: In the Action Phase, each player will take turns playing Action cards or activating Action Abilities. The goal of the Action Phase is usually to do as much damage to your opponent’s Heroes as possible. Then when both sides pass their turn, the Action Phase ends.

  4. Regroup Phase: At the start of the Regroup Phase, if the Action Phase was skipped, the active player may draw a card. Then in any order the active player may Cycle and Heal their Heroes. The Regroup Phase ends with the active player putting the top of their discard pile on the bottom of their deck.

  5. End Phase: Any effects that reference the End Phase may be used, and then the title of Active Player switches sides and the new Active Player starts a new Round.

To win the game, you either have to defeat all your opponent’s Heroes, your opponent runs out of cards in their deck, or you win by completing the tasks on Objective cards.

And there you have it! When the game is available there will be a much more in depth rule book to give you more details on the different types of cards, how to build your deck, and the various different mechanics and keywords in the game.

Until next time!
